This project was carried out in Chad, one of the five poorest countries in the world. The intervention took place in the Salamat region within the Aboudeia department. This region holds the unfortunate record of the lowest school enrollment rate in the country for children aged 6 to 14, at 21%, compared to the national average of 65%. The Foundation participated in 2010 with a donation of 50,000 euros.

The participation of girls in primary school is even lower, and in rural areas, up to 90% of them do not learn to read or write: in this situation, it is impossible to think of any future.

Access to school is very limited, but the quality of education is also very low, considering that 47% of the children attending primary school remain illiterate.

•To help ensure access to and quality of primary education in the department.
•To indirectly contribute to reducing poverty in the intervention area.
•To contribute to the reduction of gender disparities in primary education.

It is estimated that in the Aboudeia department there are 21,535 school-aged children, of whom only 4,487 were enrolled in compulsory schooling during the 2007–2008 school year. Since the project aimed to double and improve the quality of education, it can be confirmed that the direct beneficiaries were at least 9,000 boys and girls.

The program, conducted in collaboration with ACRA, carried out a direct intervention in more than 40 schools. Thanks to the support of the Renato and Armando Grandi Foundation, the following activities were carried out:
– Organizational support provided to 40 parents’ associations responsible for the sustainability of the schools.
– Training and accompaniment of 46 mother members in activities to raise awareness about the schooling of girls.
– Creation of a fund for school rehabilitation and teacher training.
– Awareness campaign on schooling for boys and girls for access to education.
